The Origin of the Word Jaguchi
- 2006
- Irregular
- material : Tap, water
The kanji 蛇口 (jaguchi) suddenly sprung to mind. I concluded that to
the person who decided on this name, water coming out of a faucet
must have looked like a snake. But I couldn’t find any evidence to support it.
I tried adjusting the angle and timing the water came out of a water faucet in
the park; I was succcessful in getting the water to look prettyy much like a snake.
We say a river “winds” or “snakes” (the world in Japanese, jako, is written
with the kanji 蛇 (ja, snake) and 行 (ko, go). Watch closely as a snake moves over
the ground; the resemblance to water is striking.
