One day I was out walking in the city and saw a piece of paper lying
on the side of the street; it had been trampled on so that the pattern of
the asphalt was imprinted on it. Instantly it gave me the idea of
embossing segments of the city on drawing paper.
A strange abstractness is obtained by drawing a sample of some familiar object
on paper with bumps and dents. It was the sensation of making a mental transfer
object in the city of my memory that stand up in my head. I rediscovered
the transparent presence of paper.
