Property of Water

Wires in the shape of a water drop rotated in the darkness create a scree on
which images are projected that exoress the behavior of water in its various
forms – ripples, water surfaces. At the instant when the slight wobbling of
the revolving object intersects with light rays, a phenomenon resembling a
rippling water surface is created. The appearance of a water droplet suggested
by this undulation revibes the viewer’s personal memories of water.
As long as light shines on the work, an endress space is created by mirrors
combined to repeatedly reflect the water droplet; this drows the viewer’s gaze
into the distance. The space is introspectuve because while the viewer is gazing
further into the distance the eye also converges on the water droplet directly
in front. I think people stand looking at the installation for a long time not
because of the repeated projection of patterns on the screen but because they are
waiting for the instant of undulation which never occurs twice in the same way.
Perhaps it could be described as searching for the “water” in their memory.
It was only late that I noticed the similarity between the quiver
of the water droplet and the tiny drop of fire on the end of a sparkler.
The mind puts the entirely different elements water and fire
in the same category.
